DA-Disaster

Saturday afternoon started off impeccably. It soon ended in DA-disaster. As pitcher (it should be noted, I did not volunteer my services, I was pretty much forced to pitch) in the Kimble Anders Celebrity Softball Challenge held at venerable Satchel Paige Stadium, I dazzled hitters early on.

Mixing an array of flat, chunky twirls with high, looping underhanders, I carried a no-no into the fourth inning. My red squad teammates (Kevin Lockett, Al Fitzmorris, Marcus Spears, Danan Hughes and co.) made the most of their opportunities as well, posting a quick six runs on the board.

It appeared that was all the team would need, as I continued to shut down the white team. However, there was ONE moment, a turning point if you will, which I figure might eventually make my book of personal anecdotes. Chapter 10: When Neal Smith nearly decapitated me.

With the burly slugger at the plate, I whipped a strike right down the pike. The former All-Pro (whose prowess I figured stopped at sacking QBs and cajun cuisine) ripped a hot grounder right back to the mound. It took a sharp hop on the uneven track and bounced up into my body. Luckily, with my feline-like relflexes I was able to get the glove up, but it caromed off my mitt and struck me under the jaw.

The crowd gasped (I would have also if I could only have been enjoying a Fresca at that moment), the ball bounded away and Neal staggered out of the batters box, figuring he had killed me.

After feeling like I received a jab to the chin from Leon Spinks, I recovered to corral the loose ball and toss Smith out at first. Alarmed that I was even conscience to make A play, let alone to the correct base, Smith came over and asked me if I was ok. I playfully ribbed him, acted like it was all good and focused on the next batter.

This, though, was the beginning of the end. I never regained my control and the White team began tatooing me. Kimble, Jayice Pearson and others started spraying line drives all over the outfield. Before I knew it, in the final two innings I had crashed and burned like Scott Elarton. Our 6-0 lead evaporated into a 7-6 loss.

It was all for charity and I suppose we raised some good money for RBI (Reviving Baseball in the Inner Cities). I had gotten to chill with some cool former Chiefs and played in a classic KC venue. But I will never forget the day Neal Smith almost killed me and my no-no turned into an uh-oh.
