Perfect Strangers

Saturday showed us just how diametrically opposite the two state line football programs have grown. If Missouris rolling hills were Paris Hilton, Kansas wide-open plains are Nicole Ritchie. Like the two starlets who had a much-publicized falling out, the Tigers and Jayhawks couldnt be more different right now.

Against Kansas State, Mizzou torched the Wildcats defense for 41 points, just another victim in its march towards the Big 12 title game. Chase Daniel, Tee Rucker, Chase Coffman and Tony Temple comprise one of the most dangerous offenses in the conference. With a chance to put their stamp on a game that was too close for comfort, the Tigers attack marched 99 yards for a score to effectively take control of the game.

Daniel has distributed the ball incredibly well this season, his first as a starter. He has no problem ducking and running when the play breaks down, but its the sophomores field vision that has impressed the most. In the 7-1 start, Daniel has shown touch on the deep balls, zip on the underneath stuff and most importantly, a gritty nose for the first down. More so, Daniels persona has given this team a much-needed emotional leader. The guys believe in him and he has delivered.

Gary Pinkel has done his part as well. Just 10 months ago, more than a few Mizzou fans wanted the axe. Pinkel had cashed four dynamic seasons of wunderkind Brad Smith into two Independence Bowls and zero North division titles. He came off as abrasive, stubborn and robotic while dealing with the criticism. However, this season Pinkel has pressed all the right buttons. Hes smartly shouldered the blame for mistakes, while keeping the team hungry and focused.

Two-and-a-half hours west, Jayhawks fans have diverted their eyes from the trainwreck of a football season towards the promise of the hardwood. In one of the most eye-popping collapses in recent Big 12 memory, KU gave up a 35-17 lead in the fourth quarter to perennial whipping boy Baylor in a devastating 36-35 loss. In their 3-5 start, the Jayhawks have shown a remarkable ability to cough up late leads, giving up double-digit leads in the second-half three weeks in a row.

The KU defense has hand-delivered two straight Big 12 offensive player of the week honors (Oklahoma States Adarrius Bowman thrashing for a Madden-like 13 receptions, 300 yards, 4 touchdowns and Baylors Shawn Bell tossing for 394 yards and a wopping five touchdowns). While Pinkel has gone from goat to great this season, the shine has come off Mark Maginos reputation. The KU head coach has followed his huge contract extension of $1.5 Million per season with disastrous decisions during the losses. His handling of the quarterbacks, inability to adjust his defensive gameplan and lack of trust in the run game has undermined the team all season.

The two programs had been closer than Paris and Nicole in their Surreal Life days, evidenced by KUs head-to-head victories in recent years. This season its different, though. Anything less than a date at Arrowhead December 7th will be a disappointment in Columbia. For Hawkers? Anything less than a good seat at the Phog for opening night will be a heartache. These two old friends have certainly grown apart. Maybe we need Oprah.
