Drafts of Hazzard

Like any episode of The Dukes of Hazzard, the Chiefs draft was pockmarked by a few intriguing moments, but largely mundane. King Carls late-April selection followed a recycled script for Chiefs Nation. A possible reach here, a value guy there and mostly a less-than-stirring set of picks. Was that the boys from Hazzard County dodging trouble or Peterson overvaluing a prospect in the first-round again?

The Chiefs selecton of Penn State DE Tamba Hali was not an exciting, buzz-worthy pick, though has plenty of potential to be the right move. Hali did not blow scouts away with his size (6-3, 275), speed (4.75 in the 40) or stats (11 sacks in 2005). However, the intangibles sold Herm Edwards and the Chiefs front office on his value. Could it be another reach for Peterson, who chose Trezelle Jenkins, Percy Snow and Ryan Sims as defensive cornerstones in the first round before? Sure. Most draftniks had Hali pegged as a second-rounder. But Halis work ethic is unquestioned and his maturity is beyond reproach, having escaped war-torn Liberia at age 11 without his mother and sister.

Before the draft, I marked Hali as a player the Chiefs should grab in the second-round. I like his nose for the quarterback and penchant for the backfield, registering a Nittany Lions team-high in tackles for loss. But was the pick too high? Another DE, Manny Lawson from NC State was still available, as well as a handful of solid corners. Lawson is taller and quicker than Hali, with a longer wingspan for batting down passes. But Edwards crowed about Halis attitude shortly after the selection, raising questions about how the head coach must feel about Sims, Greg Wesley and Julian Battle.

The Chiefs took hard-hitting Purdue safety Bernard Pollard in the second-round and Alabama quarterback Brodie Croyle with their third pick. Pollard is not a household name even in the Big 10 and Croyle tore up his knee two seasons ago. Could Pollard succeed veteran Sammy Knight as one of the starting safeties soon? Sure. Pollard plays the line of scrimmage physically and is known as a hard-hitter. Is Croyle the guy to replace Trent Green? Wouldnt seem so. Croyle lacks big-time arm strength, but carries the requisite size (6-2) most believe is vital to play QB at the next level. But its always a crapshoot. Pollard could slink away from contact by the speed and size of the NFL and Green was more lowly regarded coming out of college than Croyle.

If you do slap King Carl on the back, its because he addressed needs. On day two, the Chiefs selected Miami CB Marcus Maxey, Mississippi State OG Tre Stallings and San Diego State WR Jeff Webb. Defensive secondary, offensive line and wide receiver are all areas of serious need for Kansas City. But if Chiefs Nation was waiting for big names, forget it. Peterson passed on Mizzous Brad Smith, Ohio States Santonio Holmes, Floridas Chad Jackson and BCs Matty Kiawanuka.

Its always impossible to grade a draft the day after. Some think Matt Leinart will be a better pro than Vince Young. Im convinced Young will change the NFL landscape and become a superstar, while Hollywood Leinart will Bosworth himself right out of the league. After watching film of both, I believe Lawson has the better potential to be a game-changer rushing off the end. But what is not debatable is the needs the Chiefs have: pass rusher, wideout, offensive line and secondary. Even Carl-bashers can admit he drafted for all those positions. Now will this draft be more Daisy Duke than Boss Hog? To be determined. Yee-haw.
