Look up and down baseballs family tree: Murderers Row, the Big Red Machine, the Swinging As. Great teams filled with charisma, leaders and experience.
Well, we are here to prove that theory wrong. We have plenty of charisma. Leaders is not the problem.
Experience? This could be an issue.
This summer, the DA Show is throwing caution to the wind and sponsoring a co-ed tee-ball team in Kansas City. Sure, they are young. But so is the rest of the league. The age-limit is six.
But your DA Show Cubbies are hungry and looking for respect. There will always be a few questions marks when you start this much youth. The combined age of our starting lineup, minus the catcher, is 48.
The catcher? Well, it has to be a parent so it could be 48 as well.
Hey, say it with me: True. Blue. Tradition.
Meet our starting left-fielder, Flash. He was forced to switch positions in the offseason because of depth at third base. So, he worked hard in the winter to make the transition as smooth as possible. He ate TWO bowls of ice-cream for dessert every night!
How about our ace of the pitching staff, Lefty? She came over as a prized free-agent pickup from the Seals. But Lefty is thirsty to prove she was worth the investment. The rest of the league thought we were crazy. But we felt a case of fruit punch Capri Sun was chump change for the stability it brings us. Of course, she will not have to pitch since it is tee-ball... but we needed the presence!
Finally, our veteran slugger Wheels. He has been the subject of some trade rumors, but insists he is due for a big season since it is his contract year. Currently, we are trying to lock him up long-term him with four packs of Sour-Razz Skittles.
Our Cubbies have been made possible with the great help of the Guadalupe Center in the heart of Kansas City. The proceeds to help the Cubbies were made possible through your donations at the December charity dinner at Mayas Mexican Bistro.
The other team in town might already be gasping for air, but we promise the Cubbies will play hard every night and only ask for one thing in return: pizza.
We are encouraging all the 300-Level to come on out and support the Cubbies with us. The season opens Friday evening, May 11th. The baseball calendar can be a grind, we understand. That is why there are no dog days of our summer. Just days to play with the dog! The season is only eight weeks!
All games are played downtown on Friday evenings at Mulkey Park, 13th and Summit. We will all be there, will you?
We kicked off our 2007 campaign with a pre-season banquet (ok, a pizza party) at Beach Bums Island, at 135th and Quivera Saturday. Thanks to the support and hospitality at Beach Bums. While doing some early scouting, we noticed an impressive blend of speed and power. We clocked the kids 40-yard-dash times from the bread sticks to the arcade games. The team also displayed some serious power when they tackled one another to get to the ice cream.
For one team in town, the season feels close to over. For another, this is just the beginning.
