From the DA Show to all of you in the 300-Level that made it possible, thanks. Friday, the staff had the opportunity to deliver toys to the children at KU Med, all purchased with the donations from the first ever Holi-DA Dinner for the Kids.
The staff at KU Med, along with the families of the children, all send a huge thank you. Kling, B-Dub, Angry Jonah and I brought in four full garbage bags filled with brand new toys, ranging from Nerf footballs to Barbie hair styling sets.
We were able to deliver Legos, Superman figures, hand-held video games, John Deere remote-control tractors and much more. Thank you for allowing us the opportunity to watch the kids find reason to smile, an awesome reprieve from tubes, needles and medications. Another round of toys will be donated to Childrens Mercy.
We raised $2,580 through your $20 dinner donations and larger ones made privately. $966 was spent on toys at the Target in Mission, KS. We also made a committment to help the children at the Bridge Home, located at 60th and Swope Pkway. These are 25 children removed from dangerous or violent home situations, living together with just one amazing set of helping parental figures. They are expected to keep up the grades, attend church and be a positive force in the community for the opportunity to stay in a loving and positive household.
$812 went towards buying new sneakers for the kids, Nikes for the boys, K-Swiss for the girls. The sneakers were purchased at FootAction at the Oak Park Mall. Thank you to the employees who helped us there.
$518 was also spent on a slew of sporting goods at Dicks in Merriam, for the kids at the Bridge Home. Participation in youth sports has been instrumental in the development in all of our lives, so we decided to make sure our boys and girls had our same opportunities. We purchased basketballs, footballs, baseballs, baseball gloves, baseball bats and soccerballs for their use.
The final money (just under $300) will be used to fund a yet-to-be-determined local youth baseball team this spring.
Many thanks also to Pistol Pete and the staff at Mayas Mexican Bistro at 129th and State Line, for so willingly hosting our event. They are long time listeners of the DA Show and without their support, we would have had to hold it at Crazy Ray's kitchen.
This effort has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. I wish you all could have been there when 8-year-old Daniel, hospitalized since before X-mas and undergoing radiation treatments, grabbed his nerf basketball, drove the lane behind his bed and jammed on me. I got poster-ized in the best way imagineable.
